Read the guide →Oman's Grand Canyon. The plateau at 2,000 m looks straight down 1,000 m of rock. The Balcony Walk runs along the cliff to an abandoned village, and at night you camp on the edge with the whole gorge below. The last 30 km are why you rented a 4x4.

Fine in 4H in a Pajero; hopeless in a saloon, and rental saloons are uninsured up here. Allow an hour for the climb and go up in daylight.
Start at Al Khitaym village at the end of the road. The trail follows a ledge halfway up the canyon wall for 3.5 km to the abandoned village of As Sab — flat, exposed, spectacular, about 3 hours return. Take 2 litres of water each; there is no shade. Not for anyone nervous of heights.
The rim between Al Khitaym and the Jebel Shams Resort has flat gravel pull-offs where you can park with the tent facing the canyon. Free and quiet. It is cold: expect 5 °C on winter nights and wind — use the ladder side as the windbreak and bring the sleeping bag add-on. Sunrise from the tent is the photograph everyone takes home.
Nizwa fort and Friday goat market are on the way; Misfat al Abriyeen, the terraced mud village, is 40 minutes below the mountain and worth an afternoon. From here the coast is 3 h, Wahiba Sands 3 h 30.
A real 4x4 with insurance that allows gravel — ours does. Rent the Pajero with the roof tent; no recovery kit needed for Jebel Shams, but fill up in Al Hamra.
Tent, 41-piece kit, 2 drivers, insurance and VAT are included. Fuel and gravel-road recovery are not.
Everything else — licences, insurance, depot, peak dates — is in the main 4x4 rental FAQ.
