Wadi Bani Khalid by
4x4: pools, cave and
the road to the dunes

The most reliable water in Oman: deep emerald pools that never dry up, a café, and a cave you can crawl into. It sits an hour from the sand, which makes it the perfect lunch stop between the coast and a night in Wahiba Sands.

Route from Muscat

Route 23 towards Ibra and Al Wasil, then the signed turn to Wadi Bani Khalid: 200 km and 2 h 30 from the depot, all tarmac, the last 20 km a scenic mountain road. From Wadi Shab it is 1 h 45 via Sur and Al Kamil.

The pools and Muqal cave

The main pools are a five-minute walk from the car park (paid, 500 baisa) with a small restaurant. Walk 20 minutes upstream past the bathers and the water is clearer and emptier. Another 20 minutes brings you to Muqal cave — take a head torch and expect to crawl. Swim in shorts and a T-shirt; it is a conservative village.

Onward to Wahiba Sands

Bidiyah and Al Wasil, the two entry points to Wahiba Sands, are 45–60 minutes away. Leave the wadi by 15:00, let the tyres down at the petrol station in Al Wasil and you are on the dunes for sunset.

Camping options

No camping at the pools. Either the dunes (free, wild, the reason you rented a roof tent) or a desert camp with dinner and showers — from about OMR 30 per person. The gravel plain before the sand also has quiet spots if you arrive after dark.

Car needed

Tarmac to the car park; the 4x4 earns its keep an hour later on the sand. Pajero with roof tent plus the recovery kit add-on is the right setup for this leg.
